Getting between Santo Domingo and Punta Cana
Santo Domingo and Punta Cana sit at opposite ends of the Dominican Republic’s southeast coast. The drive follows the Autopista del Este past Boca Chica, San Pedro de Macorís and La Romana, then the Autovía del Coral into the Punta Cana resort area. Traffic leaving the capital is the main variable, so most trips take between two and a half and three hours.
Travelers usually need this route in one of two situations: they fly into Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) because the fare was better and their hotel is in Punta Cana, or they are staying in Punta Cana and want a day in the Colonial Zone. A private transfer solves the first; our guided Santo Domingo tour solves the second without you having to drive.
Public buses such as Expreso Bávaro connect both cities and are cheaper per seat, but they run on a fixed schedule, stop at terminals instead of your hotel and leave you to handle luggage and a taxi at each end. With a private vehicle the price is for the whole group, the driver waits if your flight lands late, and you can ask for a stop on the way.

Santo Domingo FAQ
How long is the drive from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana?
Plan on about 2 hours 30 minutes from Las Américas Airport (SDQ) to Punta Cana, and up to 3 hours from central Santo Domingo depending on traffic leaving the city. The route is roughly 180 km on toll highways.
How much is a private transfer from Santo Domingo airport to Punta Cana?
A one-way private transfer between SDQ and Punta Cana starts at $150 for a minivan (up to 5 passengers). A 7-seat van is $180, and a luxury SUV or 10-seat minibus is $200. The price is per vehicle, not per person.
What happens if my flight into SDQ is delayed?
Include your flight number when you book. Your driver adjusts to the real arrival time, so a delay does not mean losing your transfer.
Is there a bus from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana?
Yes. Companies such as Expreso Bávaro run scheduled buses between both cities. They are cheaper per seat but leave from terminals, follow fixed times and do not take you to your hotel, which is why most visitors with luggage choose a private transfer.

Yes. Our Santo Domingo full-day tour from $79 per person includes round-trip transportation from Punta Cana, a bilingual guide, entrance to the First Cathedral and Alcázar de Colón, and lunch. Expect a long day of around 11 hours.
