Why Samaná is worth the early start

The Samaná peninsula juts into the Atlantic on the north-east coast, roughly 230 km from Punta Cana. It is the greenest, steepest part of the country: coconut plantations running down to the sea, waterfalls in the hills and a sheltered bay that fills with whales every winter.

Every year between January and March, thousands of North Atlantic humpback whales migrate to Samaná Bay and the Silver Bank to mate and calve. Boats leave from the town of Samaná, and the show — breaching adults, mothers teaching calves — is one of the great wildlife spectacles of the Caribbean.

Outside whale season the draw is Cayo Levantado (the “Bacardi Island” of the old rum advert), the El Limón waterfall and the mangrove channels and Taíno caves of Los Haitises National Park on the southern shore of the bay.

How long is the trip from Punta Cana to Samaná?

Around 3.5 hours each way by road, which is why it runs as a full-day tour: pickup is early in the morning and you are back at your hotel in the evening.

How much does a Samaná day trip cost?
