Where to Stay in Punta Cana: Choosing the Right Area

“Punta Cana” is not one town but a 50-kilometer stretch of coast with very different neighborhoods. The area you pick decides how calm your beach is, how far you are from the airport and how easy it is to leave the resort. Here is how Bávaro, Cap Cana, Cabeza de Toro, Macao and Uvero Alto compare.

Bávaro: the best all-rounder
Bávaro is what most people picture when they think of Punta Cana: a long, reef-protected beach of pale sand lined with resorts, beach bars and water sports. Pockets like Los Corales and El Cortecito are walkable, with restaurants, shops and nightlife outside the hotels — rare in this region. Around 25 minutes from the airport, it is the easiest base for tours because most excursions pick up here.
Choose Bávaro if it is your first visit, you want options beyond your resort or you are traveling on a mid-range budget. Our Bávaro Beach guide covers the best sections.
Cap Cana: luxury and privacy
South of the airport, Cap Cana is a gated development with a marina, championship golf, high-end hotels and private villas. Its showpiece is Juanillo Beach, a calm, crescent bay often ranked among the most beautiful in the country. Scape Park and the Hoyo Azul cenote are also inside Cap Cana.

Punta Cana resort area: closest to the airport
The original Punta Cana resort zone, around Punta Cana Village and the Puntacana Resort, sits just minutes from the terminal. Expect established golf courses, a small village center with restaurants and the shortest airport runs in the region — ideal for short stays or families who dread long transfers after a flight.
Cabeza de Toro: calm in between
Between Punta Cana and Bávaro, Cabeza de Toro is a quieter, partly residential area with calm water, a lagoon and mid-sized resorts. It is about 20 minutes from the airport and close enough to Bávaro for dinner out.
Arena Gorda and Macao: mega-resorts and waves
North of Bávaro, Arena Gorda is home to some of the largest all-inclusive complexes. Beyond it, Macao Beach is a public, undeveloped beach with bigger Atlantic waves that draw surfers and buggy tours. Stay here if you plan to enjoy your resort’s facilities more than the town.
Uvero Alto: remote and romantic
The farthest area, about 45 minutes from the airport, Uvero Alto has wild, open beaches and many adults-only luxury resorts. The sea is more exposed than in Bávaro, so check your hotel’s swimming conditions, and budget for longer drives to excursions.

- Ask about sargassum in summer; some beaches are cleaned daily, others are not.
- Pre-book your airport transfer so you are not negotiating prices after a long flight.
