La Romana is Punta Cana’s elegant neighbor: home to Casa de Campo, the Altos de Chavón artists’ village and the boats to Catalina Island. Whether you are transferring from the airport, splitting your stay between two resorts or planning a day trip, this is how to get there and what is worth your time.

Getting from Punta Cana to La Romana

La Romana lies west of Punta Cana on the south-east coast. The Autovía del Coral connects both in a straight, modern toll highway, so the trip from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. From Bávaro hotels allow around 1 hour 20 minutes.

Private transfer

The easiest way to reach Casa de Campo with luggage, golf clubs or a family. Your driver meets you at arrivals, tracks your flight and drops you at your villa or hotel door.

Taxi

Airport taxis cover the route, but fares are set on the spot and vary with the vehicle. If you prefer a taxi, agree the price before leaving. Our comparison of transfers vs taxis explains the differences.

Rental car

A good option if you plan to explore. The highway is easy to drive; keep pesos for the toll plazas.

Flying into La Romana (LRM) vs Punta Cana (PUJ)

La Romana International Airport is minutes from Casa de Campo, which makes it wonderfully convenient — when a flight fits your plans. It handles far fewer routes than Punta Cana, which is the busiest airport in the country. In practice many travelers find better schedules and fares into PUJ and happily trade them for a 70-minute drive.

Best things to do in La Romana

Altos de Chavón

A recreated 16th-century Mediterranean village perched above the Chavón River canyon. Its cobbled lanes hold artisan workshops, galleries, restaurants, a small archaeological museum, St. Stanislaus church and a Greek-style amphitheater that has hosted major concerts since the early 1980s. Go for sunset over the river.

Casa de Campo

One of the Caribbean’s best-known resort communities, with a marina, polo fields, a shooting center and the Teeth of the Dog golf course designed by Pete Dye, famous for its holes along the sea. Minitas Beach, the resort’s private beach club, is calm and ideal for families.

Catalina Island

Just off the coast, Catalina offers some of the best snorkeling in the country and quiet beaches. Compare it with Saona in our island guide, or book the Catalina Island tour with pickup in Punta Cana.

Cueva de las Maravillas

A short drive west of La Romana, this cave has lit walkways and hundreds of Taíno pictographs and petroglyphs. Guided visits are short, accessible and a good rainy-day plan.

Bayahibe and Dominicus

Twenty minutes east of La Romana, Bayahibe is the base for Saona Island and the region’s dive centers. See our Bayahibe page for tours and transfers.

Day trip or split stay?

From Punta Cana, La Romana works as a relaxed day trip: Altos de Chavón in the morning, lunch by the marina and a beach afternoon. If you love golf or want a quieter, more upscale base, a split stay — a few nights in Bávaro and a few in Casa de Campo — gives you the best of both coasts with a single transfer in between.

La Romana travel tips

  • Share your villa or hotel name when booking so gate access can be arranged in advance.
  • Mention golf bags or extra luggage so you can pick a vehicle with enough space.
  • Visit Altos de Chavón late afternoon for cooler temperatures and the best light.
  • Check event calendars; concerts in the amphitheater can change access and traffic.
