Punta Cana to Bayahibe: How to Get There and What to Do

Bayahibe is where Punta Cana travelers go when they want the Caribbean at its clearest: the boats to Saona Island leave from here, the reefs are protected by a national park and the village still feels like a fishing town. Here is how to get there, how long it takes and how to spend the day.
Where is Bayahibe?
Bayahibe is a small coastal village in La Altagracia province, on the south-east coast between La Romana and the Parque Nacional del Este, officially renamed Cotubanamá National Park. Right next to it is Dominicus, a resort strip with one of the country’s best-known Blue Flag beaches. Together they form the base for trips to Saona Island, Catalina Island and dozens of dive sites.
How to get from Punta Cana to Bayahibe
The route is simple: head west from Punta Cana on the Autovía del Coral toward La Romana and turn off for Bayahibe before reaching the city. From Punta Cana International Airport the drive is about 1 hour 15 minutes. Your options:
1. Private transfer (door to door)
The fastest and most comfortable choice when you are moving hotels, arriving at the airport or diving with your own gear. With DCN Travel a minivan for up to five passengers costs from $90 one way, a 7-seat van $100. The price covers the vehicle, so it gets cheaper per person as your group grows.
2. A tour that includes transport
If you only want to spend the day, let a tour do the driving. The Saona Island tour (from $70) and the Bayahibe scuba diving tour both pick you up at your Punta Cana hotel and bring you back in the afternoon.
3. Rental car
The highway is good and there are toll plazas on the way, so carry some pesos. A car makes sense if you also want to explore La Romana or Altos de Chavón, but parking in the village is limited in high season.
4. Public transport
There is no direct bus from Punta Cana. You would need to ride toward La Romana and connect with a local guagua or taxi to Bayahibe. It is doable for backpackers with little luggage, but it can easily take twice as long as driving.
Best things to do in Bayahibe
Scuba dive or snorkel the national park
Bayahibe is the diving capital of the Dominican Republic. Beginners can try the shallow Atlantic Princess wreck, while certified divers head for the St. George, a cargo ship sunk as an artificial reef in 1999. Our Bayahibe diving guide covers every site and level.
Take a boat to Saona Island
Nearly every Saona excursion departs from Bayahibe’s docks. Typical days combine a speedboat or catamaran ride, a stop at the shallow natural pool where starfish live, and lunch on the beach. Not sure between islands? Read Saona vs Catalina.
Spend a slow afternoon on Dominicus Beach
Calm water, white sand and a reef close enough to snorkel from shore. It is the ideal way to finish a dive day or to recover after an early boat trip.
Walk the village waterfront
The old part of Bayahibe is compact: a small beach full of fishing boats, dive shops, colmados and open-air restaurants serving grilled fish. Sunset from the dock is free and one of the best in the region.
Hike to Padre Nuestro or Peñón Gorda
Inside Cotubanamá National Park, marked trails lead through dry tropical forest to freshwater caves and viewpoints. Go early, bring water and use a local guide for the cave sections.

When to go
Bayahibe works all year. The water stays around 26–29 °C and the south coast is generally calmer than the Atlantic side of Punta Cana. December to April brings the driest weather and the busiest boats; late summer is quieter, but the peak of hurricane season (August to October) can occasionally reschedule sea trips. Tips for your Bayahibe trip
- Book boats and dives ahead between December and April, when groups fill quickly.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen. The area is inside a protected national park.
- Leave 24 hours before flying after scuba diving, and plan your airport transfer accordingly.
- Bring small bills. Village shops and park fees are often cash only.
