How to Get to Punta Cana from Anywhere in the Dominican Republic

Palm-lined road leading toward the beach in the Dominican Republic

Not everyone lands at Punta Cana airport. Cheaper fares into Santo Domingo, a few days in Puerto Plata or a wedding in La Romana all end with the same question: what is the best way to get to Punta Cana from here? This guide compares drive times, routes and costs from every major city in the Dominican Republic.

Where Punta Cana is, and why the route matters

Punta Cana sits at the far eastern tip of the island in La Altagracia province. Everything else in the country is west of it, and almost every road trip funnels through the same corridor: the Autopista del Este out of Santo Domingo and the Autovía del Coral past La Romana and Higüey into the Bávaro and Punta Cana hotel zones. If you are coming from the north coast, you normally drive south to Santo Domingo first and then east.

That geography explains why distance is less important than which side of Santo Domingo you start on. From the southeast coast the trip is short and easy; from Puerto Plata or Santiago it becomes a full travel day.

Times are typical daytime drives to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). Add 20–40 minutes for hotels in Uvero Alto. Transfer prices are one way, per vehicle (minivan), from our live rates.

From Santo Domingo

This is by far the most common route. Many travelers find cheaper fares into Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) and then face a 180 to 195 km drive east. The toll highway is modern and divided, and outside rush hour the trip takes about two and a half hours. Leaving the city on a Friday afternoon can add another half hour.

  • Private transfer: door to door, flight tracking, luggage handled. From $150 per vehicle with DCN Travel.
  • Bus: Expreso Bávaro runs scheduled coaches from its Santo Domingo terminal to Bávaro. Cheapest per seat, but you still need taxis at both ends.
  • Rental car: good if you plan to explore; budget for tolls and fuel and return fees if you drop it in Punta Cana.

We cover every option in detail, including tolls and bus schedules, in our Santo Domingo to Punta Cana transport guide.

From La Romana and Casa de Campo

La Romana is only about an hour and ten minutes from Punta Cana airport on the Autovía del Coral, and it has its own small international airport (LRM) next to Casa de Campo. Guests often combine a few days at the resort with a stay in Bávaro, or fly into Punta Cana because there are more routes. A private transfer is the easiest way to move between the two, especially with golf bags or lots of luggage. See our full La Romana & Casa de Campo guide.

From Bayahibe and Dominicus

Bayahibe is the launch point for Saona Island and home to the best diving in the country. It sits about 75 minutes west of Punta Cana airport. If you are staying in Bayahibe and want to spend the second half of your trip in Punta Cana (or the other way round), a private transfer from $90 per vehicle is usually cheaper than two taxis and much faster than public buses, which require a change in La Romana. Everything you need is on our Bayahibe destination page.

From Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete

The north coast is the longest land journey: roughly 5 to 6 hours to Punta Cana. The fastest road route goes south through Santiago on the Autopista Duarte, around Santo Domingo and then east. Scheduled domestic flights between Puerto Plata (POP) and Punta Cana are rare and change from season to season, so check charters if time matters more than budget.

For families or groups, a private vehicle is often the most comfortable choice because you can stop for lunch and breaks when you want. Solo travelers on a budget can take a Caribe Tours or Metro coach to Santo Domingo and continue on Expreso Bávaro, but expect a long day with two terminals.

From Santiago de los Caballeros

Santiago to Punta Cana is about 4 to 4.5 hours by car, most of it on the Autopista Duarte to Santo Domingo. Santiago’s Cibao International Airport (STI) has good connections to the US east coast, so some visitors with family in the Cibao fly in there and continue to the beach by road.

From Samaná and Las Terrenas

Samaná is in the north-east but the bay sits between the peninsula and the Punta Cana region, so there is no short coastal road. Drive times vary a lot with the route and road works; plan for a long half-day trip and confirm the itinerary before you travel. If you only want to see Samaná from Punta Cana, a guided day trip is simpler — read our Samaná day trip guide or join the whale watching tour in season.

The math changes with group size. A minivan for five from Santo Domingo costs the same whether one or five people ride, so for families it often beats several bus tickets plus taxis. We break it down further in private transfer vs taxi in Punta Cana.

Road tips for driving to Punta Cana

  • Carry pesos for tolls. The Autopista del Este and Autovía del Coral have several toll plazas.
  • Drive in daylight. Highways are good, but rural roads can be unlit and busy with motorbikes.
  • Mind the speed bumps. Towns along the way use large "policías acostados" with little warning.
  • Share your flight number. If you book a transfer, it lets the driver follow delays in real time.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Punta Cana from Santo Domingo?

Punta Cana is roughly 180 to 195 km east of Santo Domingo. By car or private transfer the trip takes about 2 hours 30 minutes from Las Américas Airport (SDQ) and up to 3 hours from the city center, depending on traffic.

Can you fly from Puerto Plata or Santiago to Punta Cana?

Scheduled domestic flights inside the Dominican Republic are limited and change often, so most travelers go by road or book a charter. From Puerto Plata the drive is around 5 to 6 hours; from Santiago about 4 to 4.5 hours.

What is the cheapest way to get to Punta Cana from another city in the DR?

Long-distance buses are the cheapest per seat. From the north you usually ride to Santo Domingo first (for example with Caribe Tours or Metro) and then change to a bus such as Expreso Bávaro to Punta Cana. It is economical, but it takes most of the day and ends at a terminal, not at your hotel.

Is it safe to drive to Punta Cana yourself?

The main highways are modern toll roads and driving by day is straightforward. Watch for motorbikes, speed bumps in towns and unlit rural roads at night. Keep Dominican pesos for tolls and avoid arriving after dark if you do not know the area.

How much is a private transfer to Punta Cana from Santo Domingo airport?

With DCN Travel a one-way private transfer from Las Américas Airport (SDQ) to Punta Cana starts at $150 for a minivan for up to 5 passengers. The price is per vehicle, not per person.
